Palace Chess

Palace Chess is full, proper chess on a clean, easy-to-read board with smooth 3D pieces. It runs in your browser on a phone or a PC, with nothing to download.

Play against the CPU on Easy, Medium or Hard, as White or Black, or pass the phone between two players. Tap a piece to see its legal moves, then tap where it should go; a mouse click works just the same. Every rule is there: castling, en passant, promotion with your choice of piece, check and checkmate, stalemate, threefold repetition, the fifty-move rule and draws by insufficient material. Your game is saved after every move, so you can leave and carry on later, and in CPU games you can undo a move.

New to chess? The first game opens with a short guide to how each piece moves, and Easy makes real mistakes that a beginner can punish. The Royal puzzles teach the patterns that win games: more than fifty positions with a checkmate in one or two moves, from simple queen mates to back rank traps and surprise knight promotions. Stuck on one? Ask for a hint.

Tips: get your knights and bishops out early, castle to keep your king safe, and before each move ask what your opponent's last move is threatening.
